Todayโs blog posting (also viewable at WordPress 4.1.1โs Windows Troubleshooting WiFi Connects No Internet Access Primer Tutorial) is about a very specific troubleshooting issue. Its โannoyance factorโ rating is so high, that we rate its specificity as paling into insignificance if this blog posting can help at least one other Windows user.
Okay, in general terms, troubleshooting can be about defining as much as possible about the specifics โฆ
- Windows
- home WiFi wireless cable connection โฆ but we donโt rule out other types of connections where it may occur too โฆ
- you get a connection to your WiFi (it can be the 5 bar excellent connect) โฆ but even so โฆ
- the yellow (โSun of deathโ) overlay tells you, on clicking that icon down the bottom right of your screen brings up tutorial
picture (for which weโd like to thank this useful link) scenario where there is โNo Internet Accessโ
Now they are the specific symptoms. It is now up to you what to do about this, in the sense that this DNS issueโs troubleshooting and help responsibilities can involve โฆ
- your internet provider (ISP) technical support โฆ or โฆ
- employer VPN login technical support โฆ if applicable โฆ
- just little olโ you?
Okay, โlittle olโ youโ, how can we help you today?
- Press 1 for โHow can we help you today?โ
- Press 2 for โProgress on that web application โMaking You Coffee in Bed Before You Get Up During the REM Period Before You Knew You Needed Any Coffee But You Dreamt About It In Smellorama'โ?
- Press 3 for an โUpdate on Press 1โ
- Press 5 if you are in China and want a giggle
- Press 6 to start pressing the next โCrossing the Roadโ button for your โMystery Giftโ
Take an entire look at the โlookโ of the advice (that worked for us), and we got help from an excellent โemployer VPN login technical supportโ person regarding, and if it looks too involved, perhaps escalate the issue to those more senior technical support people in list above โฆ
- click at Windows icon at bottom left
- click โRunโ link
- type in โฆ
cmd - type in โฆ
ipconfig /flushdns - turn the โWiFi controlโ button at the side of the laptop or at the top above the keyboard, on and off โฆ if you have one โฆ then โฆ
- try reconnecting the WiFi via the icon at bottom right that you โฆ
- click on
- click on YourWiFiRouterName
- click โDisconnectโ
- click on YourWiFiRouterName again
- click โConnectโ โฆ wait a good while โฆ before assessing โฆ
- Is the problem solved (ie. no โSun of deathโ and โInternet Connections Availableโ)? If Yes, thatโs it, exit now, else No, continue below.
- click at Windows icon at bottom left
- type into โSearch programs and filesโ (ie. the white textbox) โฆ
devicemanager - up the top of the list presented should be a โDevice Managerโ link, so click that now
- click โNetwork Adaptorsโ
- now it gets a bit technical and specific to your situation but for us the one to pick was โIntel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260โ (as we have a Cable connection to the house), which we click โฆ but be warned it is before the next couple of steps where you might want to turn back (and escalate the issue to those more senior technical support people) now โฆ
- click the โDriverโ tab
- click the โUninstallโ button
- there should be an Action tab at the top of the Device Manager window, so please click that now
- click โScan for Hardware Changesโ
- try reconnecting the WiFi via the icon at bottom right that you โฆ
- click on
- click on YourWiFiRouterName
- click โDisconnectโ
- click on YourWiFiRouterName again
- click โConnectโ โฆ wait a good while โฆ before assessing โฆ
- Is the problem solved (ie. no โSun of deathโ and โInternet Connections Availableโ)? If Yes, thatโs it, exit now, else No, continue below.
- power off your WiFi Cable Modem Router that comes off the physical cable coming into the home โฆ and โฆ
- leave it powered off for 30 seconds โฆ then โฆ
- power it on again โฆ and wait for a while before assessing โฆ
- Is the problem solved (ie. no โSun of deathโ and โInternet Connections Availableโ)? If Yes, thatโs it, exit now, else No, continue below.
- try changing the WiFi YourWiFiRouterNameโs properties via the icon at bottom right that you โฆ
- click on
- right click on YourWiFiRouterName
- click โPropertiesโ
- click โConnectionโ tab
- if โConnect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)โ is unchecked, please check this option now
- Is the problem solved (ie. no โSun of deathโ and โInternet Connections Availableโ)? If Yes, thatโs it, exit now, else No, continue below.

Very specific issue, huh? As with all these matters there are people online that, for the most part, have talked about the same issues you experience in I.T. and we would have started our quest in this regard โฆ if we had a connection (which we did, sometimes, with MacBook Pros and iPads) โฆ with this link as a starting โsearch engineโ thought. Good luck, and will leave you with a link to some other Windows troubleshooting thoughts below!

Previous relevant Power and Lead Windows Primer Tutorial is shown below.
My computer class the other day was quite interesting regarding a theme of โpower and leadโ, with Windows. If you are a regular at this blog, you may have gleaned that we are great fans of โthe leadโ โฆ no, not the dog lead, or the false lead, or the box material that Superman canโt see through โฆ but those, usually Windows black Apple white โฆ (what gives with that?) โฆ bizzos that join one piece of computer equipment with another. On that topic, what is your approach to organizing these โhard to organizeโ parts of so many peopleโs lives, these days?
Weโll leave that with you. Anyway, this last class reminded me of 2/3 of that Seinfeld episode โEven Stevenโ, just missing Jerry as โEven Stevenโ โฆ in that โฆ
- George โฆ on the up โฆ (how does that work?!) is like the โleadโ part of the story that follows โฆ and โฆ
- Elaine โฆ on the down โฆ is like the โpowerโ part of the story that follows
โฆ and suppose if we put the two together, then we get Mr โEven Stevenโ Jerry Seinfeld.
Okay, the precursor is that, running out the door, Iโve put in the wrong power cord adaptor match for the Windows laptop Iโve put in to take to class. Along with that Iโve got in that bag, unusually, a white lead not normally there but there today because of a bag content swap.
Now weโre at (computer) class and โฆ
- It was before class that I discovered Iโd brought the wrong power cord adaptor for the battery depleted Windows 10 laptop I had with me. Alas and alack โฆ but read on โฆ
- One of my students has brought a black (what looks like a) digital camera lead to download some photos from her digital camera to her Windows laptop โฆ sounds good โฆ black โฆ Windows โฆ but it doesnโt fit โฆ it almost fits โฆ but not quite โฆ after 10 minutes of denying the obvious we whip out the (white) extra lead weโre not supposed to have packed and, miraculously, it works! โฆ another cross pollination I.T. success story!
- Then another student is beavering away at Windows 7 laptop OpenOffice document processing work when, suddenly, their screen goes completely black โฆ as distinct from black (which, of โWindowsโ course, means it contains white text) โฆ and as distinct from the dreaded blue. Cheerily we reassure that OpenOffice is great at document recovery โฆ she hadnโt Saved 40 minutes of work โฆ but deep down, weโre never really that sure. Anyway it pans out sheโd been working with battery power as she hadnโt packed her power cord adaptor. What happened for the next fifteen minutes was a bit gobsmacking to me when I think about it in an objective way, and presented here as a โcautionary taleโ โฆ we do believe thereโs a good piece of Windows 7, at least, advice that springs from this experience. The first thing we tried was to reboot the laptop, as much as anything because I didnโt see what happened leading up to the black screen happening. The result of this was โฆ
โฆ not one of My Favourite Things โฆ but we chose โStart Windows Normallyโ โฆ because we couldnโt believe that OpenOffice could cause such havoc โฆ and, looking back, am happy with that decision, though the others may have been alright as well. Anyway, that restart resulted in a Windows opening screen and a double click of OpenOffice and another completely black screen โฆ which I didnโt like the look of much.
Anyway, what other choice than to try powering on โฆ (which for us got us to โฆ
โฆ this even scarier screen, and here we tried both scary options for about 4 black and blue screen cycles) โฆ again? Well, actually, what I argue as the โmoral to this Windows 7 taleโ is that if you get into my studentโs situation, what is best to do is to get back to your laptop power cord adaptor and get it some power before doing any of this cycle of restarting the laptop. And was just about to suggest this to my student when I remembered that I had that other power cord adaptor. What if I โฆ? Please, now, switch off listening to me, as it worked for me, but two disparate power cord adaptor usage scenarios do not always, happiness, make. Youโll notice thereโs not a lot in common between the wattage and voltage and amperage and resistance dodahs of the power cord adaptors of any two laptops. However, the two power cord adaptors here, one missing, were both Toshiba, and that was encouragement enough, along with โhow can OpenOffice cause this much havoc?โ. So tried out the power cord adaptor Iโd mistakenly brought. Restarted the laptop โฆ so far so good โฆ double clicked OpenOffice โฆ yay!! โฆ good old OpenOffice had even gone to rehearsals and read its lines โฆ there shining bright and strong was what Iโd seen a few times before with this great document processing product (which weโve discussed quite a bit previously here at this blog at OpenOffice blog postings here) was its โDocument Recovery Paneโ where it gets you to a โweโre ready to take whatโs behind the middle doorโ chance to recover your last unsaved work to an โUntitledโ document โฆ
โฆ you can later rename via File -> Save Asโฆ โฆ which we did โฆ and my studentโs happy reaction told me it did a great job of recovering everything. So, bottom line, Windows 7, maybe all Windows, if youโre getting scary black or dreaded blue screens and youโre on a laptop working off battery โฆ please, first, before panicking about โworst case scenariosโ rule out โweird power symptomsโ โฆ because, if you look back, and be objective, what happened in being, perhaps, short of power and yet getting these black and blue screens coming up anyway is a bit weird โฆ so before doing other ideas, get your Windows [7] laptop to its proper power cord adaptor usage ASAP, then try restarting to see where you really stand regarding ongoing black or blue, but hopefully, multi-coloured โฆ
โฆ โWindows 7 screen of serenityโ scenarios.
Actually, as luck would have it, maybe weโre talking โGeorgeโ here?! Heaven forbid!
