As we’ve said before, to study file extensions, as boring as it might seem, is to study Information Technology. Today’s foray into this arcane wooooooorrrrllllld is, for us, with the *.psd file extension. We’re here to tell you that this *.psd is a very important file extension for web development work.

Do you know why? That would be? Interesting? It’s the Adobe file extension invented for … anyone, anyone? Yes, Cecil B de Milne, it is Photoshop, well done! That powerhouse of web design and graphic artist tool.

Photoshop has become such an iconic desktop application other applications to come along later made sure they could open the *.psd files created by Photoshop. This is how “industry standards” develop over time, commercially, rather than by decree. Who decrees on the Internet? W3C, that’s not WHO … but who … chortle, chortle.

In this context it’s not much of a surprise that our personal favourite image editor, Gimp, can read many forms of *.psd data files, as we show you today us doing in a stream of consciousness PDF slideshow for your perusal.
