What is Gimp? It edits image files. It has loads of filters and tools. Today we hone in on Gimp’s Decor filters that deal with photograph Border functionality, adding to our previous Gimp Old Photo Tutorial as shown below, which also involved a really good Gimp Decor filter, namely the Filter->Decor->Old Photo… filter, which used sepia toning (if you are into photography in darkrooms, you may remember some chemicals to do this) to create the effect of an ordinary photograph with apt subject matter, turning into an old photograph that has been in a photograph album for a looooooooong time.

So why talk about photograph border effects? Well, you’ll notice the way a border can be a photographic enhancement both for what it does itself, and for the way it concentrates the human gaze and makes what is inside the border, enhanced and glowing more somehow, even if this is a slight of light, or slight of hand, or an optical illusion, or the brilliance of Gimp Script-Fu filters.

The tutorial today was created using the brilliant Gifpal, a web application making it pretty easy to create an animated GIF.
